Moving into a care home changes how several benefits are calculated — it does not automatically end them, but families are often surprised by what shifts and when.
Pension Credit
Pension Credit can continue for someone in a care home, though the amount and the way it interacts with care fees can change, particularly once a stay becomes permanent. Report the move to the Pension Service promptly so payments are recalculated correctly rather than overpaid and later reclaimed.
Council Tax
If the person who has moved into care was the sole occupant of their former home, the property may qualify for a Council Tax exemption or reduction while it stands empty — contact the local council’s Council Tax team to apply; it is not applied automatically.
Attendance Allowance and other disability benefits
These are usually affected differently depending on whether care is self-funded or council-funded, and the rules change at specific points — confirm current entitlement with the Pension Service or Citizens Advice rather than assuming benefits stop the day someone moves in.
