Care Home Food and Nutrition: What to Actually Check Before You Choose

A printed weekly menu tells you very little on its own — what matters is whether food is actually appetising, appropriately textured for individual needs, and genuinely gets eaten.

Why this article matters

Built to reduce uncertainty for families who need to understand costs, urgency, waiting lists and real options.

Nearly every care home will show a prospective family a printed weekly menu during a visit. What that menu does not tell you is whether the food is actually appetising, whether it is prepared to suit individual dietary and swallowing needs, and whether residents genuinely eat it.

Try to see or sample food directly

Where possible, ask to see a meal being served, or even to sample it yourself. This tells you far more than a menu on paper — how it looks, smells, and whether it appears freshly prepared rather than reheated from a bulk delivery.

Ask about texture-modified diets

Many care home residents have swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) requiring texture-modified food — pureed or soft diets prepared to specific safety standards. Ask how the home handles this, whether a speech and language therapist is involved in assessing needs, and whether texture-modified meals are still presented appealingly rather than simply blended together.

Ask about weighing and nutritional monitoring

Ask whether residents are weighed regularly and screened for malnutrition risk, and what happens when a resident is found to be losing weight — whether a dietitian is automatically involved, and how quickly. A structured, proactive process is meaningfully different from one that only reacts once a family raises a concern.

Ask about choice and flexibility

Good practice includes genuine meal choice, not just a single fixed option, and flexibility for residents who want to eat at a different time or need extra help. Ask what happens if a resident does not like what is on the menu that day.

Ask about mealtime support specifically

Ask how residents who need help eating are supported — whether staff have dedicated time for this or are rushed between multiple residents at once, since rushed mealtime support is one of the more common quality gaps in busier homes.

How to use this guide in practice

Don’t read this as general information — use it as a worksheet. Write down the details of the person who needs care, the current limits of the situation at home, the monthly budget, the documents you already have, whether a local-authority financial assessment may apply, and who you’ve already spoken with. Then turn every unclear point into a specific question. A family that arrives with a clear picture usually gets more useful answers than one calling under stress with scattered information.

Keep one simple rule: anything about admission, cost, funding, timelines and whether a care home fits must be confirmed directly with the care home or the competent authority serving your area. This guide prepares the search — it does not replace official decisions.

Want a clear shortlist before you start calling?

If you don’t know which care homes to contact first, Curalune Care Help can prepare an ordered shortlist of 3–5 suitable options — with CQC ratings, contacts, useful links and a ready-to-send inquiry.

The service helps you organise the search.£69, one-off. If you don't receive at least 3 homes matching the area and criteria you gave us, we refund you in full. It does not replace the care home’s own assessment and does not guarantee admission, price or bed availability.

Important limit

Curalune offers practical help with the search and orientation. Admission, pricing, bed availability and the final assessment always rest with the care homes and the competent authorities (the local authority, the NHS, the Care Quality Commission).
