Nursing Home Activities Programs: What 'Good' Actually Looks Like

A packed activities calendar on a brochure doesn't tell you much on its own — what matters is whether residents are genuinely engaged, and whether activities are adapted for different ability levels.

Why this article matters

Built to reduce uncertainty for families who need to understand costs, urgency, waiting lists and real options.

Nearly every nursing home will show prospective families a full activities calendar during a tour. The real question worth asking is not whether activities exist on paper, but whether residents are genuinely engaged in them day to day.

Watch, don't just ask

Where possible, time part of your tour around a scheduled activity, and watch how many residents are actually participating versus how many are sitting nearby, disengaged. A well-run activity has a good proportion of residents genuinely involved, not just present in the room.

Ask about adaptation for different abilities

A strong activities program is adapted for residents at different levels of physical and cognitive ability, including those with more advanced dementia who may not be able to join a general group activity but can still benefit from sensory or one-on-one engagement. Ask specifically what's offered for residents who can't participate in the main group program.

Ask about activities beyond the day room

Good practice increasingly includes outings, visits from community groups or schools, and outdoor time when weather and mobility allow — not just games and entertainment confined to a single common area. Ask how often residents get outside the building, and whether this varies for those with higher care needs.

Check staffing for activities specifically

Ask whether the facility has a dedicated activities director, and how many hours per week this role covers relative to the number of residents. A facility relying on care staff to run activities on top of their regular caregiving duties, with no dedicated role, often struggles to sustain a consistent program.

Talk to residents and families if you can

If the opportunity arises naturally during a tour, a brief conversation with a resident or a family member visiting at the same time can tell you more about the reality of day-to-day activity than a printed calendar ever will.

Want a clear shortlist before you start calling?

If you don't know which nursing homes to contact first, Curalune Care Help can prepare an ordered shortlist of 3 to 5 suitable options — with contacts, useful links and a ready-to-send message you can put to all of them at once.

The service helps you organise the search. $89, one-off. If you don't receive at least 3 homes matching the area and criteria you gave us, we refund you in full. It does not replace the home's own assessment and does not guarantee admission, price or bed availability.

Important limit

Curalune offers practical help with the search and orientation. Admission, pricing, bed availability and the final assessment always rest with the nursing homes and the competent authorities (your state Medicaid agency, the state survey agency and Medicare).
