Studies analyzing CMS data have found that, on average, nonprofit and government-owned facilities tend to have somewhat higher staffing levels and fewer serious deficiencies than for-profit facilities as a group. These are population-level averages, though — plenty of individual for-profit facilities outperform plenty of individual nonprofits.
Why ownership structure isn't a substitute for checking the specific facility
A facility's ownership category tells you something about typical financial incentives across an industry-wide average, but it tells you very little about the specific facility down the street. The CMS Care Compare star rating, current staffing data, and recent inspection reports for that exact facility are far more reliable indicators than its ownership type.
Ownership changes are worth checking too
Some facilities change ownership, sometimes more than once, and a recent change can be worth asking about — new ownership sometimes brings improvements, sometimes cost-cutting. Ask how long the current owner and administrator have been in place, since frequent turnover in either role is sometimes an early sign of instability.
How to compare fairly regardless of ownership type
Apply the same checklist to every facility on your shortlist — CMS star rating, actual staffing data (not brochure claims), inspection history, administrator tenure, and a tour at more than one time of day. Ownership type is useful background context, not a substitute for evaluating the specific facility your parent would actually live in.
