When the caregiver needs a break
Caring for an aging parent in Vaughan never really stops. Two different things get mixed up. An adult day program covers the daytime — your parent is looked after during the day and comes home in the evening. Decide first what you actually need — the places that offer each, and what they cost, are not the same.

Who pays for respite care?
In Canada the care in a long-term care home is publicly funded, but you pay a daily accommodation co-payment set by your province. Before you assume anything, check every route:
- Provincial funding: the nursing and personal care are covered through the provincial health system, the same as for a permanent bed.
- Daily co-pay: you pay a set daily accommodation rate for the room and meals — provinces publish the amount, and short-stay respite is usually billed at the standard (basic) rate.
- Low-income subsidy: most provinces reduce the accommodation rate for residents who cannot afford the full amount — ask about a rate reduction and what income proof you need.
- Home and community care: your province's home-and-community-care / continuing-care access point arranges respite beds and adult day programs, and can point you to caregiver support.
Get any funding confirmed in writing before the stay, and ask the home for the all-in daily rate. Your provincial home-and-community-care service (Ontario Health atHome, a regional health authority, or the provincial continuing-care office) is the place to confirm what is covered and where beds are open.
The questions that matter
Do you take respite / short-stay admissions, and is there a minimum stay? What is the all-in daily rate, and what is extra? Can you meet my parent's needs — secure unit, mobility, medications, a special diet? How is overnight supervision handled? Can we visit first?
