Respite care in Gold Coast: how to arrange a short stay

Need a break as a carer in Gold Coast? How residential respite and in-home Support at Home respite work, how to arrange a bed fast through My Aged Care, what it costs (basic daily fee only, no means-tested fee) and the questions that matter.

Why this article matters

Built to reduce uncertainty for families who need to understand costs, urgency, waiting lists and real options.

When the carer needs a break

Caring for an older parent in Gold Coast doesn't stop. A surgery you need to recover from, a wedding interstate, or simply a fortnight where you're running on empty — sooner or later most family carers need to hand over the caring for a few days or a week or two. Respite care is exactly that: your loved one is looked after in an aged care home for a set period — a few days to a few weeks — fully supported, and then comes home. Using it isn't giving up. It's what lets a carer keep going.

Day respite or an overnight stay?

Two different things get muddled. In-home and centre-based respite — funded through Support at Home — covers part of the day so your loved one is looked after while you get a break, then stays at home overnight. Residential respite is an overnight stay: a furnished room, meals and 24-hour staff in an aged care home for a week or two while you're away. Decide which you actually need first — the providers that offer them, and what they cost, aren't the same.

Widen the search across greater Gold Coast. A respite bed can come up in Southport, Robina, Coomera or Nerang when the homes closest to you are full — and for a one or two-week stay a little extra distance matters far less than it would for a permanent move. A good respite stay is also the lowest-risk way to try a home before you ever commit to a permanent place.

How to arrange it quickly

Aged care in Australia runs through one national gateway: My Aged Care (1800 200 422). Residential respite needs an aged care assessment (ACAT, or ACAS in Victoria) — but in a genuine emergency a provider can admit someone to residential respite before the assessment is finished, with the formal assessment arranged within 5 business days. Call My Aged Care, say clearly if it's urgent, and use the Find a Provider tool to check real vacancies for your exact dates. Be specific about what your loved one needs — mobility help, medications, a secure memory-support area, continence care — and get the start and end dates in writing so the return home isn't a surprise. Respite beds fill fast over school holidays and Christmas, so book as early as you can.

What residential respite costs

This is the part that surprises people — in a good way. Once you're ACAT/ACAS-approved, government-subsidised residential respite is charged at the basic daily fee only (currently around A$66.80/day), with no means-tested care fee and no accommodation payment. That's a set daily amount, not the full cost of a permanent room.

  • How many days: your assessment sets your allowance — commonly up to 63 days (nine weeks) each financial year, and often extendable in blocks with approval. Confirm your allowance with My Aged Care.
  • Carer support: Carer Gateway (1800 422 737) can help arrange emergency respite and support you as a carer.
  • In-home respite: delivered through your Support at Home funding rather than as a residential stay.

Ask the home for the all-in daily fee in writing and check whether it charges any extra-service or "hotelling" fees on top of the basic daily fee for a respite guest.

The questions that matter

Do you take respite bookings, and is there a minimum stay? What's the all-in daily fee, and is anything extra? Can you meet my loved one's needs — secure memory support, mobility, medications, a special diet? What's the overnight staffing like? Can we visit first? And could it become a permanent place later if we decide that? Clear answers turn a short stay into real respite instead of stress.
